LGBT (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender) people experience a higher prevalence of health challenges and risk behaviors, in part due to cultural experiences of discrimination and harassment, minority stress, and homophobia/transphobia. In a sincere effort to reduce health disparities and improve health outcomes for LGBT people, Tobacco Free Northeast Pennsylvania and Bradbury-Sullivan LGBT Community Center have developed a partnership to address tobacco usage in the LGBT community in the region.
A pilot program has also been formed by the Pennsylvania Department of Health Division of Tobacco Prevention and Control in collaboration with Tobacco Free Northeast Pennsylvania and Bradbury-Sullivan LGBT Community Center to conduct the first ever comprehensive LGBT Health Needs Assessment.
According to data collected in 2015 in the Lehigh Valley and in Central Pennsylvania, LGBT people use tobacco at rates significantly higher than the general population. In this time of so much progress for the LGBT community, we shouldn’t let tobacco get in the way.
